A regular loft has open joists and a floor you can walk across, so laying mineral wool or blowing in loose-fill is straightforward. A converted attic room has none of that. The rafters are covered in plasterboard, there’s a flat ceiling section above head height, and behind the short dwarf walls either side of the room sit small, awkward triangular spaces — often called eaves cupboards — that are usually left completely uninsulated.

Heat escapes through all three areas: the sloped ceiling, the flat section overhead, and those eaves voids.
