It’s a bigger job than cavity filling, both in cost and disruption, but it also refreshes the exterior appearance of the house and can address damp penetration and pointing issues at the same time as it insulates.
It suits owners of older terraces, back-to-backs and stone cottages who are staying in the property long-term and want a genuine reduction in heating demand rather than a token gesture. It’s not usually appropriate for listed buildings or in conservation areas without planning consent, which we’ll flag at survey stage rather than after you’ve committed.
Cavity Wall Insulation
Cavity wall insulation is the simpler of the three jobs. If your house was built from the 1930s onwards with a genuine gap between the inner and outer brick skins, insulation — usually mineral wool beads or blown fibre — is injected through small holes drilled in the mortar joints from outside. The holes are then filled and colour-matched, and from the street you wouldn’t know the work had been done.
The job usually takes a few hours per house, causes no internal disruption, and the payback period is short — often three to five years in heating savings alone. It’s the most cost-effective wall upgrade available to homeowners in Leeds suburbs like Moortown, Alwoodley and Rothwell where standard cavity construction is common.
The caveat is that not every cavity is suitable.
